I was going to insert people playing in the gum balls similarly to people in a ball pit. However, I spent the last class testing for gmetrix.

Paper Roses

Alternative Assignment

"Tax dollars should not be wasted on art, music or theater classes in high school. Public high schools should be about training young people to enter the workforce. Period."

This statement is offensive in many ways. It assumes several things about the arts. First of all, this statement assumes that art, music, or theater are not related to the "workforce". It is saying that schools should be focusing on other classes that are related to the workforce. Little do they know, art, music, or theater makes up a large part of the workforce. There is no job that is 100% successful or reliable, but art, music, and theater is still part of the workforce.

Second of all, this statement assumes that money is being wasted on this group of classes in high school. Students who take art, music, or theater create pieces of work that can later bring back revenue for the school. The art program at most high schools have the students create original pieces of work that can be bought buy outside sources. The music department travels to perform where they attract several audience members at sporting events, competitions, and more. The theater department puts on shows where money is brought in by audience members who attend the performances. Money is not being wasted when these programs are bringing money back in at the same time.

Third of all, high school is all about finding yourself and figuring out what you want to do after you graduate. These artistic departments contain some of the most creative and laid back mentors that allow the students to become an individual while learning important content. Students taking art, music, or theater classes learn more life lessons than most students in regular core classes. Students in these classes learn to take initiative, experiment outside their comfort zone, and create a name for themselves.

Without the art departments at public high schools, students would not be prepared at all for the workforce. Period.

Portfolio Presentation Questions

Urban Camouflage
-The inspiration behind this photograph is a memory from childhood. When my brother and I were younger, I used to hide him in a large pile of stuffed animals in his room. He blended right in and I thought it was the funniest thing ever. I wanted to recreate that idea with my dogs because I remembered doing this so vividly.
-I feel that this photograph is some what successful. If the viewer has never seen my dog before, then they should have a harder time finding my dog. If the viewer already knows what my dog looks like, then he is more obvious to them. The photgraph can then either be successful or not very successful.
-If I were to do this project again, I would want to insert another stuffed animal that better resembles my dog. This would help throw the viewer off making it harder to find my dog.
Family Photo Restoration
-The people in the photograph are my family, long before my youngest sister was born. It is my brother, my dad, me, my sister, my mom, and my other sister.
-The photo had to be taken around 2004 or 2005.
-The people in this photo have not seen this colorized. They will probably be surprised because it was such a long time ago, and I was so young so the details shouldn't be so accurate for me but they are.
-The most difficult aspect of colorizing my family photo was the small details on the face and the hair. I had such a difficult time making the faces look realistic. The face is not all one color and there are blemishes and beauty marks that you have to account for. The hair was also difficult because there was not a defined outline of the hair so this made it difficult filling in the smaller pieces.
Concept Shooting "Love"
-The message of my photograph is mainly puppy love. My dogs, along with every other pet dog, treat my family with the greatest amount of loyalty and admiration. They greet us everyday as if it is the first time they are seeing us in years.
-The story that my photograph tells is how crazy my dog gets when he sees us after school. He runs up to us and knocks us over, even though he barely weighs ten pounds. Then he attacks our face with his vicious licking. I am sure every dog owner can relate to this routine.
-I simply followed my dog to whomever he wanted to greet first, and it happened to be my brother. I also captured this at a time where my brother was wearing a hat of his favorite sports team whom he loves as well. He is a huge Packers fan.
Combination Photo
-I got the idea for my combination photo after browsing the internet and looking at a few of the projects online. Then, one day my dad and I were talking about what we were making for dinner as I was looking out the front window. I saw a large tree and thought broccoli, so then I did my best to recreate that image in my head.
-The most challenging part of this project was capturing the photos with similar backgrounds. Also, it was hard to make the broccoli the size of the tree and to match it up nicely.
-If I were to do this project again, I would want to add more food like objects in the background of the photo to create more of a scene.

Class Experience

1. Quality of Work
Over the course of last semester, I have worked on several projects. For each project, I have always shot the correct number of images, if not more than needed. I make sure to always include the index print in the end to showcase my work leading up to the final product. I experimented a lot with different styles of photographs and tried my best to incorporate contrast, play with the focus of the photos, and have a strong composition. Each final product is usually enhanced through photoshop as well. I take the time to edit the photograph to emphasize the objective of the assignment. I am not the most creative person, so it was hard to incorporate deep concepts within my work, so I worked extra hard with the formatting of the photos. I never turned in a late assignment either.

2. Effort
I have always had a passion for photography, so shooting photos outside of school was never a struggle. I enjoyed trying new things with my camera and finding new subjects to shoot. When looking at other student's work, I am always amazed. There are a lot of talented and creative students in this class so I always try to provide positive feedback so that they are aware of this. I always start with an idea for a project as soon as I hear the topic, then once I start shooting I start to think of other things that would be better ideas. Then once I decide on the final idea to shoot, I make sure I have the perfect angle and time of day to take the picture.

3. Participation
During each block, I make sure to start right away on the required project. I make sure to use as much time on the project as I should be. Once I am completed with that, I like to experiment with Photoshop and try to understand more about it. I am on time to class everyday, and have only had to leave class towards the end for other duties. On days that I know I have to leave early, I make sure that I have worked on everything that I should be working on. I also always participate in peer critiques so that the photographer knows how great their work is and if there is anything they can improve on.

4. Improvement
From the first project we ever worked on in this class, I feel I have definitely improved. I barely remembered how to work Photoshop from last year so I was pretty much a new user. I remember trying to cut out images to place on another images and it was so choppy my eyes hurt looking at it. Now, that I have had more time to experiment with Photoshop, I feel I can more smoothly create more compelling images. I am also not the most creative person, but I have tried to go outside of my comfort zone to capture different subjects that I wouldn't typically shoot. I have enjoyed working through this class and cannot wait to improve further through this next semester.
